Ahead of the 2020 model year, Volkswagen announced that the company would be introducing a new two-row version of their increasingly popular VW Atlas. The Atlas itself is relatively young, having just joined the lineup for the 2018 model year. Now, the three-row midsize crossover is joined by the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport here in Bluffton SC.
As mentioned, the main difference between the Atlas proper and the new Atlas Cross Sport is the number of seats. The Atlas itself is a three-row midsize crossover offering seating for up to seven passengers, while the new two-row Atlas Cross Sport only has enough seats to accommodate up to five.
Outside of the number of rows and seats, two other noticeable differences between the original Atlas and the new Atlas Cross Sport is that the latter features a lower roofline and a more angled rear window, leading to a sportier exterior appearance than the former. It is, however, offered with the powertrain options as the Atlas itself. That includes the 2.0L TSI inline-four cylinder, which is capable of generating 235 horsepower, or the 3.6L VR6 engine that delivers up to 276 horsepower.
Some of the standard features found in the 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport include a full set of LED lights, 18” aluminum-alloy wheels, the new next-gen Car-Net infotainment system that features Wi-Fi capability, as well as a few driver-assistive safety features: Front Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert. Even more features are available, like the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, 20” and 21” wheel options, heated seating in the rear, a factory-installed remote start system, the Easy Open tailgate and a few more advanced safety technologies, including Adaptive Front-light System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display.
